Bone grafts are extremely beneficial, especially when you need to restore your jawbone after gum disease attacked and deteriorated it. However, because the treatment is so invasive, the recovery period following surgery is extremely important. You need to take it seriously otherwise severe consequences can occur.
So, to help you properly heal after bone graft surgery in Modesto, California, Dr. Param Gill and our dental team encourage you to follow these steps:
Step No. 1: Do your best to stop the bleeding and reduce the swelling. When dealing with the bleeding, place a clean gauze pad over the surgical site and apply some pressure for about an hour. When the time is up, check to see if the bleeding has stopped. If it hasn’t, replace the used pad with a new one and add pressure for another hour. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack outside of the area for 30 minutes at a time. Have the ice pack on the area 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off. Do this for the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery.
Step No. 2: Take the medications your dentist prescribes to you. This can help with pain and potential infection. Make sure to closely follow the instructions of the medication and don’t take them on an empty stomach. This can lead to nausea.
Step No. 3: Have a soft-foods diet and drink plenty of liquids once your sedative has worn off. When drinking, please avoid using a straw. Using a straw can dislodge the clot and encourage bleeding. When eating, only eat soft, cool foods and chew on the other side of your mouth.
Step No. 4: Get plenty of rest the first two to three days after surgery. Whatever you do, do not participate in strenuous activities because exercise can further weaken you.
