What Do You Know about Sleep Apnea?

Posted .

Are you the victim of sleep apnea? Would you be aware of it even if you were? Sleep apnea is a common but difficult to detect sleeping disorder resulting from obstructed airways and interrupted breathing patterns while you sleep. It often goes untreated because patients are not aware they are suffering from it.

One of the most common kinds of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This typically occurs when a person’s airways are blocked. This could be the result of physical characteristics, your position when you sleep, or having an object too close to your mouth. Another type is central sleep apnea, which occurs when breathing signals sent from the brain to the chest are not transmitted. Both forms are extremely serious and can result in diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks.

Your gender and genetics may play a key role in your risks for developing sleep apnea. Males over the age of 40 are at the highest risk of developing the sleep disorder. In addition, those with a deviated septum, nasal blockages, allergies, and sinuses, or enlarged tonsils or tongue are at a greater risk to develop signs of sleep apnea.
